Available weekdays throughout
November with a carvery lunch and
weekdays throughout December with
a fish & chip supper this is something
a little bit different for Christmas.
Charles Dickens didn’t exactly invent
the British Christmas but in his stories
he did invent an idea of a London
Christmas that has been exported
around the world. It’s a Christmas of
foggy streets and hearty feasts with the
rich man at his table and the poor man
with his nose pressed to the frosted
window.
Come and meet the Guide on Fleet
Street in November or Petticoat Lane in
December at 10.30am for morning coffee
and biscuits included in the tour fee. The
morning tour is all about the people’s
Christmas. We’ll show you the old meat,
fish and game markets in a London that
Dickens knew well and tell you all about
the Cockney favourites of jellied eel, pie
& mash and whitebait from the Thames.
Add in the Victorian fashions for hot
chocolate and hotel teas and you’ll be
ready for lunch! A carvery in November
or fish & chips in December included
in the tour fee. Individuals can buy any
desserts or drinks they fancy.
For the afternoon we’re going upmarket
to see how the other half lived and how
they celebrated a Dickensian Christmas
with visits to Mayfair and the ‘dilly.
We’ll walk through the marvellous and
opulent Burlington Arcade built to allow
the toffs to shop unmolested. You can
see the beadles clad in top hat and tails
and employed to chase off any Artful
Dodgers! We’ll also visit the world
famous Food Hall at Fortnum & Mason
where impeccable young men in red
tail coats stack the shelves. This is a
wonderful place to find some stocking
fillers to treat the family.
There will be time to buy tea locally
before heading home at 4.45pm.
