Step From the Palace to a Four Star Hotel Carvery
Visit Buckingham Palace State Apartments & when
you come out step across the road for a two-course
carvery with tea or coffee at the four star Rubens Hotel
Lord Allpride & The Plain Princess
The Rubens Hotel occupies the site of a much earlier
house owned by the Earl of Mulgrave, a haughty chap
nicknamed Lord Allpride. He’d flattered Queen Anne
when she was a plain 15 year old princess by flirting
with her and soon after coming to the throne she gave
him the title Duke of Buckingham. He at once set
about building a new house to match his new station
in life but progress was slow because he was reluctant
to be parted from his money. The architect only got his
money by threatening to throw the Duke from the roof!
When George III brought the house he renamed it
Buckingham Palace. Soon all along the Buckingham
Palace Road (or Chelsea Road as it was then) grand
new houses sprang up and alongside them came the
shops and traders to supply the Royal court.
The Rubens at the Palace started trading on this site
in 1912 - the year of Titanic and Captain Scott at
the South Pole. The hotel was an instant hit with
debutantes and others attending functions at the
Palace. During the Second World War it became
the HQ for the Free State Polish Army. General
Charles De Gaulle, the leader of the Free French
army in exile, also stayed here. Very well regarded
in the industry The Rubens at the Palace is rated by
the Automobile Association as one of the highest
four-star hotels in London.
And the food - oh my the food is marvellous!
The carvery is legendary for the premium Aberdeen
Angus beef selected from the finest Scottish herds.
There’s a choice of meats and all the beautifully
prepared roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables,
gravies and sauces that you would expect. Dessert
and a coffee or tea is included in this package.
The Old Masters Carvery at The Reubens Hotel
With a truly royal location at the 4-star Rubens Hotel
on Buckingham Palace Road the Old Masters Carvery
is just a stones throw from where you exit from the
Buckingham Palace State Apartments.
On the ground floor of this luxurious hotel opposite
the Royal Mews the restaurant has a traditional setting
complete with ornate ceilings and chandeliers and
tables beautifully presented with elegant and armchair
style seating. No jeans or trainers please!
We suggest a morning visit to the Buckingham Palace
State Apartments at 11.00am followed by lunch at
the Old Masters Carvery at The Reubens at the Palace
hotel at 2.00pm and head home at 4.00pm. But it is up
to you. I think I’d prefer to walk around Buckingham
Palace when my legs are fresh and have a lovely lunch
to look forward to with the chance to chat all about
what we saw at the Palace. But if you prefer you
could arrive for lunch between midday and 2.00pm
and visit the Buckingham Palace State Apartments
two hours later. It’s a three hour visit at Buckingham
Palace once you factor in time for tea and the shop.
