Just nine miles from the bustle of the City of
London Epping Forest is a place of sunlit glades,
rough heaths and great hornbeam trees. In the
morning we explore the heart of the Forest and visit
a Tudor hunting lodge. After lunch in genteel
Epping our afternoon is spent enjoying gardens
which are delightful whatever time of the year.
Come and meet your forest guide to begin with time
to buy morning refreshments in Chingford before
visiting a truly peaceful and atmospheric building.
Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge was built for her
father Henry VIII as a grandstand for guests. This
was royal Tudor “corporate hospitality” to show
off the wealth and power of the King. There are
great views from the top of this masterpiece of
timber work and don’t be too put off by the prospect
of stairs – they are shallow with resting places –
we should remember Henry VIII wasn’t a very
healthy man!
Epping Forest owes its creation to the Norman
Kings who loved to hunt, its past to the Londoners
who lived and played here and its future to the
Corporation of the City of London who, at no cost
to the ratepayer or taxpayer, look after the forest
today. Next to the hunting lodge is a brand new
building called The View built by the Corporation
and housing displays to explain the history of the Forest
from the Iron Age camps to the modern day including
sections on
o create pasture.
We’ll take you on a scenic coach tour stopping off to
see the church in the romantic heart of this glorious
forest. For lunch we arrive in Epping on the old
coaching route from London & Cambridge which made
it a favourite watering hole for travellers and rich
pickings for Dick Turpin and other highwaymen.
Today Epping is a genteel town with a good quality
High Street with a choice of places to buy a lunch.
