The London C
Many people have enjoyed a Thames Cruise but I’m betting
that few have enjoyed the delights of the River Thames by night.
Although David Beckham can now add himself to the ranks of
those who have passed beneath a floodlit Tower Bridge!
The Thames has changed so much since we started our annual
Christmas cruises 15 years ago. Back then the River was quite
a different place. From the Thames Barrier to Greenwich there
was barely a light aside from the perpetual flame from the vodka
factory! Now we board alongside The O
2,
which began its life
as the Millennium Dome and went on to become one of the most
popular concert venues in the world. This iconic building starred
in a James Bond movie and is now world famous as the London
Olympics venue for the gymnastics and the basketball finals.
This year for the first time you’ll see the gondolas of the new
Thames Cable Car swooshing to and fro above our boat and
you can book a tour that includes a cable car flight as well as
the Christmas Cruise. Apartment blocks line the river banks now
forming a string of lights for most of the ten mile cruise.
Inside the London Rose is warm and cosy with a fully licensed
bar selling the usual range of bar drinks as well as hot drinks.
Completely refurbished this year the London Rose can seat
over 200 people but we restrict it to 150 so that everyone has
plenty of room. There’s seating for everyone inside two heated
cabins with big picture windows but we also have a massive
open deck ideal for sailing beneath a floodlit Tower Bridge.
The cruise lasts for 90 minutes and covers ten miles. We pass
beneath ten bridges and you will see the Queens House and the
Royal Observatory at historic Greenwich - backdrop for the
Olympic equestrian events, the Docklands and Canary Wharf
lit up as our own mini Manhattan, the Tower of London, The
Shard, HMS Belfast, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Shakespeare's Globe
Theatre, Tate Modern, the London Eye and the Palace of
Westminster. It really is a very magical evening on the river.
There are a number of options for an enjoyable afternoon and
early evening trip for this Christmas. All options are available
Sundays to Thursdays from 18 November to 6 December 2012.
