James Corner is planning a series of ‘pleasure
gardens’ for the centre of the Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park that will function as outdoor rooms
of different sizes and characters to be used for
events such as concerts and theatrical performances.
They’ll lead off from a tree-lined promenade.
Be prepared for something quite unusual - in New
York’s High Line Park, which is pretty much one
long promenade, he put oversized wooden chaise
longues at varying positions so people can sit up
front or tucked back a bit into the planting and enjoy
people watching as other park users create a sort of
catwalk of human interest.
At the southern end of the park, scheduled to open at
Easter 2014, there will be a visitor centre with a
large café, a roof deck and booths where tickets can
be bought for events and trips up the Orbit which
will stay as a permanent feature of the park.

to follow the story of the new
park as it develops. We will begin taking groups for a
walk in the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from
August 2013 – the North part that is, remember the
park as a whole doesn’t fully open until Easter 2014.
If you can hold on for further news please do so but if
you need to plan your complete 2013 programme now
you can book our
Pick & Mix Olympic Legacy Tour
which is available daily from August 2013. Your trip
will include a walk in the park, morning coffee and
lunch together as a group and a single flight on the
Thames Cable Car but as new options become possible
you can quite literally pick and mix. The final list of
options might include the opportunity to go inside the
wonderful Aquatic Centre for the cost of a spectator
ticket for the public gallery, a tour of the Olympic
Stadium (probably not before August 2014), the Orbit
and who knows, fingers crossed, even a boat trip.
With the
Olympic Legacy Pick and Mix Tour
you
can get a date safely booked in with us now for your
2013 programme knowing you’ll be giving your
members a walk in the Olympic Park with a great
guide, morning coffee and lunch and a flight on the
cable car that links two Olympic venues, The O
2
and
Excel in the Royal Dock but much nearer the time
we’ll provide a menu of options and you can make the
final decision on what to include in your day. Keep the
cable car and add a visit or take it out and replace it
with a new option. It’s up to you. Read more about this
tour in the August issue of
