THE COCA COLA LONDON EYE
The London Eye is the capital’s second giant observation
wheel. The first, The Great Wheel, modelled on the original
Chicago Ferris Wheel was built for the Empire of India
exhibition at Earls Court in 1895 and carried up to 1600
people at a time in its 40 cars to a height of 308 feet until
it was taken down in 1906.
The London Eye which was opened by Prime Minister Tony
Blair on 31 December 1999 was initially intended to be a
temporary structure but in 2006, in a deal brokered by Mayor
of London Ken Livingstone, the attraction was given a 25
year lease which guarantees the South Bank Centre income
of at least £500,000 a year. It’s been the BA London Eye,
The Merlin London Eye and the EDF London Eye and since
January of this year it has been the Coca Cola London Eye.
The public walk up rate is now a whopping £21.50 for adults
