The day starts at 10.30am at the oldest pub in
Portsmouth, a very attractive light filled place with
a thousand stories to tell. Portsmouth is the only
UK city on an Island – there is water on all sides
of you today. Sailors and passengers arriving by
sea once came ashore at the King James’ Gate,
guarded by soldiers - a drawbridge raised over a
moat isolated this tip of Old Portsmouth, known as
Spice Island. This is a very pleasant flat walk
through interesting streets lined with a hotch-potch
of beautifully restored old houses. We’ll gaze out
to sea from the
hot walls
where centuries of
sweethearts have shed tears of fear for departing
lovers and tears of joy for returning heroes.
We’ll muse over the long and colourful history
of Britain’s Navy and visit the cathedral before
returning to the pub for a group lunch of lemon
& thyme chicken served with mashed potatoes
and seasonal vegetables. A vegetarian option is
available when booked in advance. Morning coffee
with biscuits and lunch is included in the tour fee
and individuals can treat themselves to bar drinks
and desserts as desired on the day.
After lunch we’re going to take a short but sweet
coach tour of Portsmouth will give you an
entertaining overview of the rest of the city before
setting down at Gunwharf Quays. Here we board
a boat for a 45-minute harbour tour with an
entertaining and informative commentary to see
what Navy ships are in port. Portsmouth is still the
home of the British Royal Navy and a harbour tour
is the best way to enjoy great views of our frigates,
destroyers and helicopter carriers. You’ll also
enjoy great views of the Historic Royal Dockyard
including Nelson’s flag ship HMS Victory.
Back to Gunwharf Quays where you can buy tea
before setting off home at 4.45pm. If you want you can
opt to spend an extra hour here to mosey around the
designer-outlet shops. Another option is to have
morning coffee and biscuits included in the tour fee at
the oldest pub in Portsmouth but free time for lunch
and shopping at Gunwharf Quays and include a trip to
the top of the Spinnaker Tower - there’s a ticket holder
only café midway up with great views where you can
buy tea before heading home.
