ONE TO DO ON YOUR OWN
War Horse, Monty’s Roller & Concorde!
Tracing the history of fish & chips we came across
Alexis Soyer whose work training army chefs in the
Crimea was the start of the evolution of the Royal Army
Catering Corps. Today this is part of the Royal Logistic
Corps - the largest corps in the British Army with over
16,000 soldiers and officers working in regiments of
every type. Forming corps also include Transport,
Ordnance, Pioneer, Engineers plus the Army Postal and
Courier Services and they have a museum at the
Deepcut Barracks near Camberley in Surrey.
The Museum’s curator Dr. Andy Robertshaw (right)
made the Channel 5 TV documentary The Trench
Detectives about his and Dr David Kenyon’s 17
archeological digs of battlefields. Dr. Robertshaw was
also an historical advisor on the Hollywood movie War
Horse and even ended up with a small part in the film as
an army recruiting officer in a small village and is later
seen in the trenches blowing the whistle to signal the
men to go over the top.
The Museum is open daily except Fridays and Sundays.
It is free with donations welcome. You can arrange
a guided tour or a talk by contacting the Museum on
01252 833371. Their website is www.rlcmuseum.co.uk.
You also get to see Montgomery’s Rolls Royce.
The Royal Logistic Corp Museum is between the A3
and the M3 and is about a 40 minute coach transfer
from the Brooklands Museum, the birthplace of British
motor sport and aviation at Weybridge just inside the
M25 between the turn offs for the A3 and M3. There’s
a lot to see at Brooklands which is open every day.
A big draw is the 30 minute Concorde Experience
where you board Concorde to see an exhibition and
take your seat in the front cabin for a virtual flight.
Admission is £8-00 group rate for senior citizens with
the Concorde Experience an additional £4.00. You can
also pre-book a 2 hour guided tour for £2.00pp.
Brooklands has a café on site so maybe the best plan
for a day is to start at the Royal Army Logistic Corps
(open 9-00am to 4-00pm) and then move onto
Brooklands for lunch, the visit and tea on site.
Brooklands closes at 5-00pm in Summer and 4-00pm
in the Winter. Call them on 01932 857381 ext 248
or see their website at www.brooklandsmuseum.com.
