This is a brand new day out for groups of 35 or
more people who like to see a lot without walking
too far with a top notch Blue Badge guide and
including morning coffee at a four star hotel and
a two course lunch with coffee in a country pub.
Come and meet the guide at the foot of Box Hill by the
River Mole at 10.30am for morning coffee and biscuits
(included). Keats wrote poetry here, Nelson wooed Emma
Hamilton and in the 1930s the mediaeval tithe barn from
Abinger Common was rebuilt here. We’ll drive up to
Ranmore Common to see
the cathedral in the woods
- if
you’d like to see inside we can arrange that for a £2.00pp
donation to the church. The old tales of the Surrey Hills
and the stories of the people who have lived here makes
for an entertaining and very scenic morning as we wend
our way to the picture postcard village of Shere for lunch.
If you can, come on a Tuesday or Thursday so that you
can include a visit to the wonderful little Shere Museum
(free entry but all donations are really welcome). Whilst
in Shere you can opt to visit the church with the guide to
hear the story of the young girl who chose to live as an
anchorite bricked up in a cell in the chancel wall or simply
enjoy browsing this timeless village where the Tilling
Bourne bubbles through and every building is of great age
and interest. Lunch is included in your tour fee at the
ancient pub in the heart of Shere (pictured page 14).
Choose a main meal in advance from a choice of steak &
ale pie served with seasonal vegetables and mash, chicken
Caesar salad or a vegetarian quiche with new potatoes and
The Beautiful Surrey Hills
salad and choose dessert on the day from a selection
including crumble, cheesecake and farmhouse dairy ice
cream on the day. A cup of coffee or tea after your lunch
is also included in the tour fee. This is a lovely pub.
In the afternoon we are going to sweep through more
photogenic countryside and see a little of the market town
of Dorking as we head for Box Hill and one of the best
views in England. If you have enjoyed a tour with one
of our award winning guides before you’ll know how
good they are and how their entertaining commentaries
and insights create a continuous flow of interest. A well
organised day moves seamlessly from one interesting thing
to the next and you’re never overwhelmed with too much
information - we aim to get the balance right building in
time to listen time to chat and time to browse on your own
throughout the day. Up on Box Hill there’s a whole cast
of characters to hear about from television pioneer John
Logie Baird to the eccentric Major who was buried upside
down at the top of the hill.
Last but not least we drop back down to the Denbies Wine
Estate for time to buy tea before heading home at 4.45pm.
The walking is gentle on this day rating a 2.5 on the
Olympic track guide meaning 1000 metres (1100 yards)
spread throughout the day. Coach mileage is 40.
Available weekdays all year, come Tuesday or Thursday
April to October if you’d like to include Shere Museum.
Adults & Seniors: £28.00
