Since 1992 Buckingham Palace has opened its doors to
the public. While the Queen is away at Balmoral nineteen
official state rooms which are used for state visits,
investitures, and ceremonies are opened to reveal the
extravagantly decorated rooms furnished with the finest
objects from the Royal Collection including paintings
by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto, fine furniture and
Sèvres porcelain.
The special exhibition for 2016 is entitled Fashioning
a Reign: 90 Years of Style from the Queen’s Wardrobe.
Marking the Queen’s 90th birthday, the exhibition
explores the development of her personal style over the
decades, her support for British designers such as Hardy
Amies and Sir Norman Hartnell and her own contribution
to royal couture. As Buckingham Palace is the setting for
many memorable State and family occasions during The
Queen’s life and reign, the exhibition will present the
fashions of ten decades, from the 1920s to the 2010s.
It will show the unique requirements of royal couture,
from ceremonial and military attire to ensembles worn
at family celebrations, such as weddings and christenings.
Early childhood, The Queen and The Duke of
Edinburgh’s wedding, the Coronation, and wardrobes
created for royal tours and State Visits will all be
represented.
Organisers who book their own visits to Buckingham
Palace must pay for tickets in advance and these tickets
