trees, 25 acres of meadow and lawns plus brand new
allotments to replace ones that were taken away from
the local people to build the Olympic Park.
The Olympic Venues - North Park
The
Velodrome and the BMX circuit
along with a
new outdoor cycle circuit and a mountain bike trail
will become part of
The Lee Valley VeloPark
alongside a Lee Valley Tennis Centre and Lee Valley
Hockey Centre. The name reflects the fact that the
Olympic Park sits in the lower part of the Lee Valley,
the River Lee rising in Hertfordshire and emptying into
the River Thames at Bow Creek opposite The O

.
The Multi-Use Arena, (its name so dreadfully dull that
it was instantly nick-named
The Copper Box),
the
venue for the handball, modern pentathlon and the
Paralympic goalball – will be turned into a public
arena with 7,500 seats.
The South Park & Plaza
There are plans for a visitor centre at the
South Plaza
near to the
Olympic Stadium.
The future of the
stadium itself is still to be decided. The beautiful
Aquatic Centre will have the spectator grandstand
wings removed before it opens as a public swimming
pool. The tall red twisted steel observation tower called

The Olympic Park After The Games
The Olympic Park at Stratford will close to the
public immediately after the London 2012 Games
for a £300 million programme of works that will
transform the entire site into the Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park The river valley at the top of the park,
called the North Park, will be the first to open but
not until 27 July 2013 exactly one year after the
Olympic Opening Ceremony. A further section of
the North Park will open towards the end of 2013.
The rest of the Park, the more urban section down
towards the Athletes Village and the Westfield
shopping centre containing the Olympic Stadium,
Aquatic Centre and the ArcelorMittal Orbit will be
known as the Olympic South Park and Plaza and is
opening from Easter 2014.
You will not be able to go up the ArcelorMittal orbit
Tower before this time nor into the Aquatic Centre
or Olympic Stadium. Margaret Ford, the outgoing
chair of the London Legacy Development
Corporation (LLDC), said the Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park would be the capital's version of New
York's Central Park. Kitchens will be added to the
existing apartments in the Athletes Village ready for
residential sale but further neighbourhoods complete
with schools and community facilities will be built
in stages over the next 20 years.
The transformation of the Olympic Park is known
as
Clear, Connect, Complete
and has three
main objectives.
Clear
involves removing
temporary venues like the Basketball and Water
Polo Arenas, the athletes warm up track which
spanned the Greenway plus Games-time security
and spectator areas.
Connect
refers to transport
infrastructure works including adding new footpaths
and reconfiguring the Games-time bridges and
underpasses.
Complete
involves doubling the
amount of parkland to 250 acres with 2000 new
