The Cheapside Hoard will be on show at The
Museum of London from 18 October 2013 until
27 April 2014. Join our Blue Badge Guide and
Gemmologist Jeanie for a sparkling day out.
We are offering a choice of two itineraries which
will give your visit to the exhibition a very
entertaining and informative context:
London’s Lost Jewels: The Mystery of
the Cheapside Hoard
Meet Jeanie the Gemmologist Blue Badge Guide at
10.30am at St Mary-le-Bow on Cheapside to buy
morning coffee in the crypt cafe before exploring
the ancient streets to reveal the story of Elizabethan
and Stuart London as a centre of conspicuous
consumption at the crossroads of the Old and New
Worlds. Without walking very far at all you’ll see
where the Cheapside Hoard was found and hear
about Stony Jack the Fagin-come-antiques dealer
who found this incredible treasure. Cheapside was
the market place of the City and it’s very
interesting to look for the clues to the different
things that were sold and to who owned what - and,
in this timeless place ,in many cases still do. We’ll
also see The Goldsmith’s Hall and Guildhall as we
wend our way towards the Museum of London for
lunch followed by a visit to the exhibition.
There’ll be time to see a bit of the rest of the
museum, visit the book shop which has a great
selection of London and history books and buy tea
before heading home at 4.45pm.
Available daily 18 October 2013 to 27 April 2014.
When St Mary-le-Bow Cafe is closed we’ll start
with time to buy refreshments at an alternative
venue.
All That Glitters: The Gems & Jewels of London
Including a visit to The London Silver Vaults.
Join Jeanie the Gemmologist Blue Badge Guide on this
limited availability day which combines a visit to The
Cheapside Hoard exhibition with a morning tour that
takes in Hatton Garden, the ancient church associated
with the blessing of the throats in remembrance of a
saint punished for her vain youthful love of necklaces
and The London Silver Vaults where the largest single
collection of silver for sale in the world is housed in a
subterranean Victorian Safe Deposit that not even Hitler
could breach.
We’ll start with time to buy morning coffee at 10.30am
behind the Law Courts and head straight to the London
Silver Vaults The Chancery Lane Safe Deposit opened
in 1876, renting strong rooms to London's wealthy elite
to safeguard their household silver and jewellery. Silver
traders began renting vaults to safeguard their stock - a
need made more pressing by the outbreak of the Second
World War. As word of the vaults spread they became a
must for visitors from overseas seeking quality silver at
competitive prices and the number of dealers grew.
We’ll spend a full hour here for you to explore the
treasure on offer, from small inexpensive pieces to
breathtaking, incredibly valuable and at times, quite
huge pieces. Jeanie will take you through London’s
diamond district of Hatton Garden just across the road
and via a tiny alleyway (with a tiny pub) to the oldest
Catholic church in London to hear the tale of St. Audrey
who gave her name to tawdry baubles. We’ll have free
time for lunch nearby and spend the afternoon at The
Cheapside Hoard exhibition as described to the left.
This option is available
weekdays only
during the
exhibition period 18 October 2013 to 27 April 2014.
Both trips: Adults: £19.95 Seniors: £17.95
Refreshments and lunch not included.
